Pride on the Porch

June 2021

This rounded out my second piece on The Porch restaurant in Daybreak Utah. We decided on this piece literally right before I started chalking on the 3rd. The idea was to do a pride themed piece. A year to the date I had finished my first piece on this same wall! It was quite fitting and ironic to complete another piece in the same place a whole year later. It took me about 13 hours and sized 5x7.

I went rather off the wall on this piece, using only her skin tones and shading from the original photo and completely reinvented her headdress and shirt. I love playing with color and find it in literally every skin tone, every light, no matter how seemingly plain and flat the color may look at first glance. This piece was a little different because I couldn’t pull my normal amount of color into her face even if I could see it! I wanted to set her skin tones and clothes apart significantly rather than blending them together. In a way, it was out of my comfort zone to create such an obvious display of color.

I am notorious for saving hands and teeth for the absolute last. I always seem to pick poses with really difficult hands, they seem to turn out just fine in the end.

Thank you Sonny Mauricio for these wonderful photos
